A Token Gesture is an interactive NFT minting experience and generative art exhibition, located at the Inspace City Screen, by the Bayes Centre, on Potterrow, Edinburgh.
There are three ways for people to experience and get involved with the exhibition and the research.

To create your piece, visit our exhibition in-person on Potterow.

By presenting a colour to the camera in the window, anyone can experiment and generate unique piece of digital art.

You can experiment and create as many pieces as you like, but to register one to include in the exhibition, scan the QR code to save your piece, and provide an email address to receive guided instructions to claiming an NFT.

We will send you clear and simple instructions about how to claim your NFT by email.

This NFT is free, but non-transferable. It won't cost you any money to take part - you'll just need mobile phone or computer, and an internet connection.

Once created, the NFT will be automatically entered into the exhibition, and displayed at random through the City Screens on Crichton St.

In addition, during the course of the exhibition we will unlock the ability for you to return to the exhibition in person, and use your NFT to request an immediate display of your piece.

Important Information

You can learn much more about using crypto-wallets, blockchains and NFTs by reading our FAQ here, but there are some key things you should know before getting started:

  • You won't be able to sell or to transfer your NFT to another wallet.
  • We will ask you to confirm you are over 18 to set up a wallet, claim an NFT, and take part in any further research.
  • Looking after your wallet is really important as it is the only way to access your NFT. As a 'decentralised' system - we can't manage or access your wallet for you.
  • In fact, we will never link your email address and your wallet address. We will not know who owns any wallet unless you reveal that to us.
  • Any transactions with a wallet are public through the way they are stored on a blockchain. However, you can participate in this project completely anonymously.
  • It is possible for people to send other tokens to your wallet address. We do not recommend you trust or engage with these tokens, as they may be spam, or unwanted advertisements for other NFT projects. If you have any concerns, or queries, please let us know and we can advise you.

A Token Gesture is an academic research project, led by researchers at the Institute for Design Informatics.

We would like to invite anyone over 18, who takes part in the project and claims an NFT to take part in follow-up research to share with us your experiences and opinions of the project. This is entirely voluntary, and we would like to speak to people with any level of expertise, and those who are both critical and supportive of this project, and NFTs more broadly.

If you provided an email address, we may use this to:
  • Invite you to take part in a short survey about your experiences and views
  • Invite you to a follow-up interview with a researcher about your experiences
  • Invite you to academic and research events about NFTs
  • If you would like to know more about what it means to take part in this further research, please download and read our participant information sheet for this project.
